To assess my students I have decided I will do two things. The first thing is to have each student create a digital portfolio of all of their work throughout the year. To do this I will use a website called https://www.classdojo.com/ where students can upload work and I can approve the stuff they upload and give them feedback. I can also upload any materials I think would be helpful to them here for them to see and we can set it up for their parents to be able to see the work they have created as well. This will be a different website from the one they upload stuff for critiques or to be graded as this one doesn't allow other students to see each other's work. It will simply be for documentation of work and a way for me to assess their progress throughout the year. Here they will upload all worksheets, projects, and sketches. Plus it is also very cute and students can design their own little monster avatar!

These are the standards I will be focusing on:
Colorado Teaching Standards for 4th grade Visual Arts
Fourth Grade, Standard 1. Observe and Learn to Comprehend
Respond to an artist's point of view being mindful of historical, contemporary, and cultural context.
Evidence Outcomes:
Students Can…
Recognize how the human experience is expressed in diverse ways
Respond to works of art using inference and empathy.
Assessment: Shown by completing the artist detective worksheet
Fourth Grade, Standard 2. Envision and Critique to Reflect
Interpret and evaluate personal work and the work of others with informed criteria.
Evidence Outcomes:
Students Can…
Discuss and define how to determine appropriate criteria for a given work of art.
Discuss and form an opinion about the social and personal value of art.
Synthesize researched and visual information to imagine, inform and plan possible next steps in personal artmaking.
Evidence Outcomes:
Students Can…
Research from multiple sources to inspire works of visual art and design.
Investigate the ways alternative ideas are generated.
Assessment: Shown through the completion on the mindmap activity, the artist detective worksheet, and the response to their peers.
Fourth Grade, Standard 3. Invent and Discover to Create
Investigate ideas of personal interest to plan and create works of visual art and design.
Evidence Outcomes:
Students Can…
Generate multiple ideas in order to select the idea that best communicates the intended meaning.
Communicate a plan for completing works of visual art and design.
Analyze through collaborative discussion how personal works of art can be refined to effectively communicate.
Utilize media in traditional and inventive ways to communicate personal intent.
Evidence Outcomes:
Students Can…
Justify how the choice of media communicates personal intent.
Problem-solve and persist to determine the outcome of a final product.
Prepare works of visual art and design for presentation.
Assessment: Shown through their art proposal, the completion of a piece, and their artist statement worksheet.
Fourth Grade, Standard 4. Relate and Connect to Transfer
Investigate and discuss how diverse communities address issues relevant to their culture, place and times.
Evidence Outcomes:
Students Can…
Identify and describe how visual art and design communicate meaning between any subject, discipline, event or issue.
Compare works of art between diverse cultures to understand how the role of art is perceived within a given community.
Compare how artists work in different cultures and at different times in history.
Assessment: Shown through class discussions, worksheets, and critique of others' work.
Here is an example rubric that I will be using when grading assignments that will be available for students to look at ahead of time. I want to stay away from any language that assesses their actual artistic skills and focus more on their effort and behavior throughout the project. I also want to focus on grading whether they had a purpose, the studio habit they were working on, and if they gave a meaningful artist statement that fits with the I CAN statement or answered the essential questions. Part of this will be assessed through their artist statement. Most of the standards I am trying to cover are assessed through the worksheets I have them complete so the rubric is more for assessing artist habits as in keeping the room clean, managing their time, taking risks, and planning out their actions.
I have also included a self-evaluation rubric for each student to fill out that is worded similarly. This is important to me as it gives the students the chance to explain if something went wrong or any obstacles that might have prevented them from achieving excellent or good. Of course, I will always be available for them to tell me in person but sometimes its easier to talk about your struggles to a piece of paper, not a person.
