Activity

Students will use the SHOM Engage and Persist to work on a two-week-long project where they make plaster masks and then paint them to look like certain emotions.

Pre-Assessment/Discussion

I will first explain to students SHOM and talk about what it means to engage and persist in a project with a class discussion and sharing with partners. Then we will talk about how to safely use the materials. Lastly I will show them an example of some masks. For this week we will be only focusing on the actual creating of the masks not the emotions part.

Post-Assessment

I will go around and ask students what they thought of the new material and if they found any challenges with their project. Through this I should be able to see their play and exploration. I might ask leading questions such as:

· What was easy with the material?

· What is your favorite part of using plaster?

· What was challenging with this material?

Materials

· Plastic mask molds

· Plaster

· Water cups filled with warm water

· Paper to go under that they put their names on
